The American Public Works Association, Southern California chapter, delivered its Transportation Project of the Year - Regional Agency award to the Orange Line Extension, a design-build project designed by Willdan Engineering for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro).
APWA's program for the Awards Luncheon on December 10, 2013, described the project: "Due to the success of the Orange Line, a 14 mile dedicated bus way in the western San Fernando Valley, Metro decided to extend it north four miles from the Canoga Station to the Chatsworth Amtrak/Metrolink station. The resulting extension offers improvements to north-south mobility by connecting activity centers along the corridor and providing the option to connect the Amtrak and Metrolink at its northern terminus and the Red Line at its eastern terminus."
The $98-million project was completed on time and under budget, resulting in significantly improved public transportation times and access throughout L.A. County.
