K-12 and Higher Education

Willdan is a Trusted Partner for K-12 School Districts and Higher Education

Willdan has worked with over 200 higher education clients and 2,000 K-12 schools. We understand that educational facilities prioritize a safe, comfortable, and efficient learning environment. Educational facilities have individualized goals based on a variety of factors, such as the size of campuses, functionality of campus buildings, funding sources, and decision-makers.

Willdan has worked with stand-alone private universities, large-scale state systems, and rural school districts. We recognize that educational institutions are leaders in the energy, sustainability, and preparedness space, and our team can serve the unique needs of each facility to meet your goals.

Highlighted Project

The following projects demonstrate our excellent work for educational institutions:

Marshak Science Tower energy upgrades

Marshak Science Building Rehabilitation

College in Manhattan Saves 1.3 MWh/year

The Marshak Science Building is part of the City College of New York campus on the upper west side of Manhattan. The building is a mid-rise, 750,000 square foot science building, which includes research and teaching labs, office areas, a library, an auditorium, and a gymnasium with a pool. To address indoor air quality issues caused by aging infrastructure, Willdan is implementing a multi-phase project that includes the study, design, and construction management for the renovation of the facilities.

Two of the three project phases are nearly complete, including the installation of a new building management system, retrofits of flow fume hoods, and new make-up air systems for the building’s laboratories. This project has already resulted in avoided costs of $55.4 million to replace failing systems, and an annual energy savings of over 1,325,000 kWh. Additionally, the measures addressed building air quality and environmental control issues that had plagued the facility and led to violations and lawsuits against the college.

Pueblo Schools

Pueblo County School District 70

Engineering for Success

Pueblo County School District 70 (Pueblo) selected Willdan to complete a performance contract for energy-efficient facility improvements. This contract followed a collaborative effort between Pueblo and Willdan to develop a district-wide, 15-year master plan to maintain and update K-12. In collaboration with the Colorado Energy Office, Willdan was able to install measures that not only saved energy, but also improved environmental conditions within school district facilities. This project delivered 1,794,000 kWh in annual savings.

California Community Colleges

California Community Colleges

Emerging Energy Efficient Technology Demonstration

Willdan deployed approximately 3,500 Advanced Plug Load Management Devices (APMDs) at California Community College campuses. This project was made possible through an Electric Program Investment Charge (EPIC)-funded grant from the California Energy Commission’s Energy Research and Development Division. This emerging energy efficient technology demonstration study delivered 147,000 kWh/yr in energy savings, reducing plug loads by 17.7% for customers spanning all four California investor-owned utility territories.

What Our Customers Say

“Willdan worked closely with our facilities staff, district leadership, and school board to truly understand the challenges that our district faced […] Even though we’re not a large district, we felt like we were Willdan’s top priority. They even wrote us a grant and applied for the utility incentives that ended up covering almost all of the project cost.”
